A Neighborhood-sized Opportunity on Columbia Pike at Barcroft Apartments
Level of Effort: 5 minutes, at home, in your PJs
Deadline: EXTENDED Sun 4/7 11:59pm

Arlington County's financing of the Jair-Lynch acquisition of Barcroft Apartments was a huge win for housing affordability in Arlington County.  As the process of renovation and redevelopment moves forward, we must ensure that it is also a huge win for sustainable mobility along Columbia Pike.

The Barcroft Apartments stands between the current end of the 12th St Bike Boulevard and the W&OD Trail and occupies a large part of the land adjoining the high-crash intersection of George Mason and Four Mile Run Drives.  It is likely that the bike boulevard cannot be completed nor the intersection safety increased without leadership and cooperation from Jair Lynch. This online engagement is a great opportunity to ask the County and Jair-Lynch to look for solutions to these transportation problems as part of the planning for redevelopment and renovation at Barcroft.

Under priorities, we suggest ranking the following highly:

  • Vehicle, bike, and pedestrian connections through Barcroft as a parallel route to Columbia Pike
  • Vehicle, bike, and pedestrian connections for Barcroft residents to easily access external networks and amenities (e.g., businesses, transit)
  • Vehicle, bike, and pedestrian connections on the property (to a new amenity center, leasing office, among apartment buildings, etc.)

Suggested Comments for the Comment Box:

Please consider how this redevelopment can support simplifying the complex and unsafe intersection of George Mason Drive and Four Mile Run Drive. Ensure this redevelopment provides a high-quality extension of the 12th Street Bike Boulevard, with infrastructure appropriate to the expected volume of traffic, with a direct connection to the W&OD Trail, and easy access to new & existing retail and park space.
