Businesses can earn up to 4 standard points and one bonus point in each of our three modal categories: walking, microbility, and transit.
Walking:
- Having an entrance that is directly accessible from the sidewalk, without having to cross a parking lot (2 points) OR having an entrance that can only be accessed by crossing a portion of the parking lot, but there is a designated and well-marked area for doing so (1 point)
- Adjacent sidewalk is even, comfortably wide, has curb ramps where necessary, and has street trees and street lights. (1 point)
- Is either not adjacent to a 4+ lane road, or there is a controlled crossing (stop sign, traffic signal, or HAWK light) of the adjacent 4+ lane road on the same block.
Micromobility (Biking & Scooting):
- Nearby bike racks - space for at least 4 bikes (1 point)
- Nearby bike racks have 2 point of contact for each bike & enough clearance to be easily usable (not a wave rack, wheelbender rack, or rack jammed right up against a building or other obstacle) (1 point)
- Nearby Capital Bikeshare Station (1 point)
- Adjacent protected bike lane, trail, or quiet neighborhood street (1 point)
Transit
- Nearby bus stop (1 point)
- Nearby bus stop has a shelter and a bench (1 point)
- Served by a bus line that comes at least every 15 minutes, and runs 7 days per week (1 point)
- Served by at least two bus lines with different destinations (1 point)
One bonus point in each category can also be awarded at the reviewer's discretion for an uncommon feature that makes that business particularly easy to get to via one of our travel modes.
Each business then receives a letter grade score for each mode, as well as an overall letter grade according the following:
>= 5 => "A+",
>= 4 and < 5 => "A",
>= 3.7 and < 4 => "A-",
>= 3.5 and < 3.7 => "B+",
>= 3 and < 3.5 => "B",
>= 2.7 and < 3 => "B-",
>= 2.5 and < 2.7 => "C+",
>= 2 and < 2.5 => "C",
>= 1.7 and < 2 => "C-",
>= 1.5 and < 1.7 => "D+",
>= 1 and < 1.5 => "D",
>= 0.7 and < 1 => "D-",
< 0.7 => "F"
