Level of Effort: Choose Your Own Adventure
Deadline: Online by 11:59pm on Tuesday 10/20
Date and Time: In-Person on Tue 10/6
At long last, the County is looking at real, potentially major safety upgrades to Carlin Springs Road. Carlin Springs Road is a major cut-through route for traffic, carrying 28,000 vehicles a day right past two elementary schools and a middle school. Carlin Springs Road is a miserable place for everyone - the sidewalks are narrow, obstructed, and rarely buffered from speeding cars in any meaningful way, safe crossings are few and far between, there is no infrastructure for bikes and scooters, and transit riders are stuck in traffic at peak hours. Many demands are placed on Carlin Springs Road due to the connectivity (or lack thereof) in the area - there are few options to cross the Long Branch and Four Mile Run stream valleys, concentrating travel on the few places where it is possible and few streets cross Carlin Springs Road at standard intersections, meaning even those just trying to cross Carlin Springs Road end up having to travel on it.
The County is finally taking a hard look at this corridor, kicking off two corridor studies - one for North Carlin Springs Road (which has no schools and many fewer cars) and one for South Carlin Springs Road (which has all three of the schools and the most cars on a daily basis). We think there are many improvements needed on Carlin Springs Road - one of which is the Kenmore Connector Trail that we have been campaigning for since 2019.
If you're able to attend an in-person meeting, we'd love to see you at the County's kick-off event at the Kenmore Middle School Cafeteria on Tuesday 10/6 from 7pm-8:30pm. If you'd care to join other safe & sustainable transportation advocates, we'll be holding a pre-meeting Happy Hour at Bronson Bier Hall in Ballston from 5pm-6:45pm and then traveling in two groups together to the Open House - one caravan by bicycle, another group via the Metrobus A76 that drops off in front of Kenmore.
If you can't make the in-person meeting, you can give your feedback via the online feedback form. It's open now and accepting comments through Tuesday 10/20. See below for suggested talking points.
