Columbia Pike Bike Boulevards: The Closest We'll Come to Biking the Pike
Level of Effort: 20 minutes, in-person, at a place, within a 2 hour window
Date and Time: Thu 9/18 6pm-8pm

For a variety of reasons, good and bad, Columbia Pike is being completely rebuilt without any dedicated bike facilities.  Instead, parallel routes are supposed to exist for bikes just north and just south of the Pike, the Columbia Pike Bike Boulevards.  These routes have never been fully connected, but the County is finally looking at creating a long-term cohesive plan for these routes.

The need is great - wayfinding must be improved, traffic needs to be calmed, major road crossings need to be addressed, and gaps need to be filled!  Very little has changed since bike4thepike fought for these things in 2018!

Come to the upcoming Open House at the Walter Reed Community Center on Thursday 9/18 from 6pm-8pm to see the concept designs and make sure they are complete, connected, and comfortable for all ages. If you're unable to attend the Open House, keep your eye out for our next action alert with suggested talking points for the online survey that will open up after the Open House!

As you're reviewing concept designs, consider:

  • Are the designs safe and comfortable for all-ages and abilities?
  • Bike boulevards only work if traffic is slow and low-volume.  Do the concept designs ensure this is the case through traffic-calming measures and modal filters?
  • Do the designs run the full-length of the Pike?
  • Do they connect well to existing and planned bike infrastructure like the W&OD trail and the proposed trail on George Mason Drive?
  • Many destinations will be on the Pike itself.  Are there enough access points between the bike boulevards and the Pike?
  • Are safe crossings of major arterial roads being proposed?
  • Are hills being minimized to the extent possible?
  • Will the route be easy to follow?
