A Safe Space to Walk on Four Mile Run Drive
Level of Effort: 5 minutes, at home in your PJs
Deadline: Wed 8/31 11:59pm

South Four Mile Run Drive is built like a road in an auto-centric industrial area - wide lanes, multiple wide curb cuts to access businesses and terrible or non-existent sidewalks on the south side.  With many businesses and amenities on the south side that attract pedestrians such as Jennie Dean park, the Dog Park, Theater on the Run, and New District Brewing, this is not an acceptable situation.

While funding is not yet available for a capital project, the County has a plan to improve the situation as part of routine repaving - repurposing a lane for cars as a dedicated walking area and improving the crossings at Oakland & Oxford.

There were some loud voices at the recent virtual meeting focused more on aesthetics than safety and very concerned about whether the automotive businesses along the stretch can continue to store cars in the public right-of-way long-term and free of charge.  It is important that people speak up for safe pedestrian access to the parks and businesses in the area.

Concept 1 (paint-only)

This is an improvement, but not enough of an improvement. Without physical barriers the new walking area will not feel safe and will see a lot of illegal parking. The road diet will calm traffic, but will still allow high-speed turns across the sidewalk areas if the driveways are not narrowed. The county should implement this now and work towards Concept 2 over the winter.

Concept 2 (with barriers)

This is the better concept and the county should move toward this design over time. The barriers make the on-street sidewalk area safe and keep cars from parking in it, the narrowed driveways slow turning cars and reduce the areas of sidewalk where pedestrians are exposed. The road diet & angled parking will help calm traffic.
