The survey shows several intersection concepts and then asks if the intersection changes will make you feel more or less safe via various modes. You are then given a chance to explain why you chose those options.
Overall, we think it is important to show support for the changes while continuing to push for more improvements, therefore we suggest you generally choose that the improvements will make you feel "safer" and indicate in the comments additional improvements that would get the project to making you feel "much safer".
Arlington Blvd Concept
The short-term concept:
- makes me feel safer biking because I would have dedicated space.
- makes me feel safer walking because I would no longer be directly next to car traffic.
- makes me feel safer driving because I would be less afraid of a bike or pedestrian stepping off of the narrow sidewalk
- makes me feel safer taking transit because I would feel safer walking to the bus stop.
- would make me feel "much safer" if more were done to calm vehicle speeds and improvements were shown to make it more comfortable to cross George Mason Drive at either end of the bridge
The long-term concept:
- makes me feel safer biking because I would have space separate from cars & wouldn't need to cross George Mason Drive as frequently.
- makes me feel safer walking because I would no longer be directly next to car traffic.

Columbia Pike Concept
The intersection changes:
- make me feel safer biking because I would have space separate from cars
- make me feel safer walking because I wouldn't be vulnerable for as far of a distance when crossing Columbia Pike
- make me feel safer taking transit because I would feel safer walking to the bus stop.
- would make me feel much safer if there weren't so many lanes to cross when trying to safely cross George Mason Drive
- would make me feel much safer if I was certain that my crossing was separated from any car movements by signal timing
- would make me feel much safer if there were more features to calm speeding traffic
Four Mile Run Drive Concept
The intersection changes:
- make me feel safer biking because I would have space separate from cars
- make me feel safer walking because I wouldn't be vulnerable for as far of a distance when crossing the street
- make me feel safer taking transit because I would feel safer walking to the bus stop.
- would make me feel much safer if there weren't so many lanes to cross when trying to safely cross George Mason Drive
- would make me feel much safer if I was certain that my crossing was separated from any car movements by signal timing
- would make me feel much safer if there weren't so many car movements to keep track of - it still feels like cars could be coming from anywhere at anytime
- would make me feel much safer if there were more features to calm speeding traffic
Potential Additional Crossings
I support these additional intersection safety treatments. More needs to be done to make the intersection with 8th St safer given its proximity to Alcova Heights Park and the unsafe driver behavior in the slip lane. This intersection sees a lot of bike traffic because the 9th St Bike Boulevard dead-ends before George Mason Drive.
