How do you solve a problem like Glebe Road?
Level of Effort: 15 minutes, at home in your PJs
Deadline: Thu 7/27 11:59pm

Glebe Road: an arterial road designed almost exclusively to move cars at a high rate of speed, that cuts through both Arlington's densest neighborhood (Ballston) and lowest-income commercial area (Buckingham).  It divides both Fleet Elementary and Thomas Jefferson Middle School from a large chunk of their attendance zone, makes the 9th St Bike Boulevard challenging to navigate, and typically hosts about 3+ serious crashes per year.

At long last, VDOT is looking at possible safety fixes for this problematic road, from I-66 down to Columbia Pike.  Take some time and weigh in!

Consider highlighting:

  • Places where speeding is a problem.
  • Places where it is difficult to safely cross.
  • Places where lighting is insufficient.
  • Places where street design causes conflict between cars and pedestrians (like slip lanes).
  • Places where pedestrian refuges would aid crossing.
  • Bus stops that lack shelters.
  • Places where sidewalks are insufficient.
  • Places where you would like to bike but currently feel unsafe without protected infrastructure.

Arlington's High Injury Network Audit for Glebe Road has a lot of useful information & suggestions.
