The Harris Teeter at Shirlington Village on the surface seems like it would be the perfect spot for customers to arrive in a transportation mode other than private vehicle. The mall itself is pedestrian friendly with lots of restaurants, shops, and a library and theatre. Plus the Shirlington Transit Center is a short 5 minute walk away and the Four Mile Run trail runs alongside S Arlington Mill Dr (though crossing the four lane road is a little daunting). However, this Harris Teeter location is still incredibly car focused. The main entrance to the store is through the large parking garage, though there is a small pedestrian entrance alongside the sidewalk of S Randolph Street (this pedestrian entrance was suspiciously closed when I arrived there at 6AM). The only "bike rack" installed is near the parking garage entrance and its design and placement near the wall makes it difficult to lock up anything but the skinniest bike. The store manages to score well with the SusMo criteria in spite of these setbacks, though we wish for some improvement considering its fantastic location.
