A People-Friendly King Street
Level of Effort: 10 minutes, at home, in your PJs
Deadline: Sat 3/30 11:59pm

King Street forms the border between the Fairlington neighborhood in Arlington and the City of Alexandria.  As such, it is an important corridor for residents of both jurisdictions. Alexandria is seeking input on potential improvements to King Street and we think it's important that Arlingtonians weigh-in!

All three alternatives are better than the status quo, bringing wider sidewalks, more trees, better stormwater management, and a two-way protected bike lane.  Overall though, we think Alternative 2 is the best option as it brings a dedicated bus lane to the mix to speed transit operations.  We are hopeful that the sidewalk and two-way protected bike lane can be better separated from each other though - either by a grade change as Alternative 3 envisions, or simply by horizontal space with plantings.

ALTERNATIVE 1 - TWO WAY TRAFFIC

Overall Opinion: Dislike

Things we like about it:

  • Reduces Crossing Distance across the Access Road
  • Wider Sidewalk
  • Separated Bike Lanes
  • Stormwater Treatments

Things we dislike about it:

High number of conflict points for people walking & biking who are trying to cross King St.  Must track & avoid cars going multiple directions, multiple times, with many complex turning movements. Forces buses full of many riders to be stuck behind cars carrying only one or two people.

ALTERNATIVE 2 - ONE WAY TRAFFIC + BUS LANE

Overall Opinion: Strongly Like

Things we like about it:

  • Reduces Crossing Distance across Access Road
  • Wider Sidewalk
  • Separated Bike Lanes
  • Stormwater Treatments
  • Improved operation Time for Buses
  • One-way Traffic on Access Road reduces potential crashes and conflicts

Things we dislike about it:

Wish the CycleTrack were more separated from the sidewalk - either by an elevation change, or by plantings.

ALTERNATIVE 3 - ONE WAY SHARED TRAFFIC

Overall Opinion: Neutral

Things we like about it:

  • Reduces Crossing Distance
  • Wider Sidewalk
  • CycleTrack that is at a different elevation than the sidewalk
  • Stormwater Treatments
  • One-way Traffic on Access Road reduces potential crashes and conflicts

Things we dislike about it:

Forces buses full of many riders to be stuck behind cars carrying only one or two people.
