A Safe, Low-Stress Trail to Long Bridge Park, Aquatics Center, and Beyond!
Level of Effort: 15 minutes, at home in your PJs

Date and Time: Open House Thu 9/26 5-7:30pm

Arlington County is moving forward with a beautiful, low-stress trail connection along Long Bridge Drive.  Unlike the existing door zone bike lanes that put you right up next to cars with no protection and are often blocked, this trail would be up a curb, separated from traffic by a planted buffer, and along the west side of Long Bridge Drive where there are few intersections or driveways to contend with.

It would connect to Long Bridge Park, Long Bridge Aquatics Center, the fully-funded Long Bridge Bike/Ped span that will cross the Potomac River to DC, a new trail being built soon along Clark Street down to to the Crystal City Metro, and the under construction 2-way protected bike lanes on Army Navy Drive. This is a critical piece in the low-stress micromobility network in National Landing.  Speak up in support and help move the design forward to an even better place with a few key pieces of feedback about making crossings kid-friendly and safe!

Suggested Free-Form Comments:

- The overall design is great!

- The split trail results in more impervious surface and could cause confusion resulting in crashes.  It also makes it more difficult to safely pass. Prefer the traditional trail design over the split design.

- The crosswalk near the proposed split trail deserves additional safety treatments such as a Rapid Flashing Beacon, raised crosswalk, or pedestrian refuge. This is the main access for kids to the soccer fields.  If we're going to successfully support kids biking and scooting to soccer practice on their own, then this crossing needs to be excellent and super-safe.

- Option 2 is a much better option for fixing the intersection with the Aquatics Center Parking lot access.  The median is needed to prevent drivers from making illegal and dangerous left turns across the crosswalk and the pedestrian refuge greatly improves the crossing of Long Bridge Drive.

Maps

There are three maps.  The first is an overview, the second gives a potential split trail option in one are (which we don't love) and the third shows two potential intersection reconfigurations for the entrance to the Aquatics Center Parking.  Vote up our existing comments or add your own!

In-Person Option

In addition to the online feedback form, the County will hold an Open House on Thursday 9/26 from 5pm-7:30pm at the Aquatics Center.  If you've got questions, this is a great chance to get them answered before you weigh in!
