A Low-Street Biking Connection to the New Long Bridge Bike/Ped Bridge to DC
Level of Effort: 5 minutes, at home in your PJs
Deadline: Sun 10/22

You may have heard that a new bridge to DC for people walking & biking is coming to Arlington by 2030.  With the existing bike lanes on Long Bridge Drive being frequently blocked by parked cars and providing no protection, & the Arlington Parks Department wanting to keep fast long-distance biking off of the Long Bridge Park Esplanade, there's a gap between the Crystal City Bike Network and this important regional connection.

To fill this gap, the County is considering building a trail along Long Bridge Drive that would connect to the new bridge and the new trail connection being built by the Boundary Channel Drive project at the north end, and at the south end to the new trail being built along Clark/Bell Street to the Crystal City Metro as well as the east end of the Army Navy Drive Complete Street project two-way protected bike lane.

Right now they want to understand how you experience Long Bridge Drive.  We think it's important that they know that 1) the existing bike lanes are often blocked 2) the existing bike lanes are not sufficiently low-stress to work for all ages & abilities 3) Long Bridge Drive is hard to cross as a person walking or biking and 4) this new facility must provide an equal or better biking experience to the Long Bridge Esplanade, or people will likely just bike on the Esplanade.

We think it's important that the County knows that:

  1. The existing bike lanes are often blocked
  2. The existing bike lanes are not sufficiently low-stress to work for all ages & abilities
  3. Long Bridge Drive is hard to cross as a person walking or biking
  4. This new trail must provide an equal or better biking experience to the Long Bridge Esplanade, or people will likely just bike on the Esplanade - it needs to be safe, shaded, low-stress, direct, and easy to use
  5. This trail will be an important connection between DC, the Mt Vernon Trail, Pentagon City, and the Crystal City Metro

You can share those items (and more!) through any combination of the freeform text box at the end of the survey, or by dropping pins onto the map in the last step.
