A People-Focused Route 1 - Streetscape & TDM
Level of Effort: 5 minutes, at home in your PJs
Deadline: Fri 6/16 11:59pm

At long last we have a final proposed cross-section for an at-grade Route 1 and it's mostly great news - 10' to 14' sidewalks, 6' protected bike lanes, protected intersections, a combined 26' to 36' of landscaping area for tree planting, reasonable turn lanes, leading pedestrian intervals, pedestrian refuges, single-stage pedestrian crossings, a potential barnes dance at 18th St, no right turns on red, a 25 mph speed limit, and more!

A few things still need to change, however, and as the concept design phase nears its end we're running out of time to do so.  Now is the time to hammer home on these last few needed changes to make sure that Route 1 work for people, not just cars!

Question #1 Concept Design Feedback:

- Overly wide car lanes undermine the promised 25mph speed limit and design speed as they will encourage speeding.  Reduce lane widths to 10' and/or count the gutter pan in the lane width as Arlington County DES does.

- 20th St Crosswalks need green pavement markings to indicate that drivers should expect people on bikes & scooters traveling faster than walking pace.

- Implement the diagonal crossing at 18th St. It is the only way to maintain the high degree of safety that people walking & biking currently enjoy at this "intersection" (which is currently an overpass). People walking & biking are used to sharing space & managing conflict with each other at intersections.

Question #3 Comments / Questions on Proposed TDM Strategies:

- Supportive of Parking Cash-out (giving employees the ability to receive the cash value of any potential parking benefit instead of that parking benefit from their employer).

- Suggest working through existing Transportation Demand Management (TDM) partners (like Arlington County Commuter Services) rather than creating a new entity or structure for this TDM work.
