Sustainable Access Score
A-
For a fairly suburban-format grocery store, the Cherrydale Safeway has some decent facilities for sustainable mobility access if you look beyond the literal wall around its parking lot.
Pedestrians can access the main entrance from Langston Boulevard without having to traverse the parking lot thanks to covered sidewalk that connects them. Pedestrian can also access the main entrance from Monroe Street via a dedicated sidewalk - it initially looks like it is blocked by EV chargers, but the sidewalk has been widened to continue around the back of the chargers. A delightful and thoughtful touch is a little path providing access from the residential building next door - I award this design feature a pedestrian bonus point! The sidewalks on Monroe and Langston are in good condition, reasonably wide, and include lighting and shade.
Micromobility users can take Capital Bikeshare (immediately adjacent to the parking lot on Monroe) or choose between terrible but weather-sheltered bike racks next to the entrance, or higher-quality but open to the sky bike racks on Langston. This stretch of Langston has painted bike lanes, but they don't connect to much and aren't comfortable to use. On the day I visited there was a steady stream of middle-schoolers biking past this Safeway, but on the sidewalk due to the poor on-street infrastructure.
The ART 55 comes frequently and the nearby bus stops feature shelters, benches, and trash cans. Sadly this store lacks any other solid transit connections.
