Save the Penrose Square Bikeshare Station
Level of Effort: 5 minutes, at home in your PJs
Deadline: Tue 10/17 5pm

Penrose Square has a documented problem with scofflaw drivers doing all sort of obnoxious stuff - pulling illegal u-turns through a pedestrian crossing right next to a park, double-parking, parking illegally, and running stop signs.

The County has decided that the best way to solve this problem is on the backs of Bikeshare users - they will relocate the Penrose Square Bikeshare station to Wayne & 9th St to make space for more convenient parking for Starbucks patrons.  Nevermind that the traffic problems at Penrose Square long predate the Bikeshare Station's installation and nevermind that the location at Wayne & 9th St S was explicitly rejected when the Penrose Square bikeshare station was sited - it is not a prominent location, it is too far from the park and the grocery store, and it's on a cross street which does not cross the Pike, effectively limiting usage to people who live north of the Pike.

Let the County manager know this is not a solution to the problems at Penrose Square and making this change with less than a week's notice and no broad, transparent, public process is not how we're supposed to solve problem's in Arlington. Don't delay, the station is already scheduled for removal on October 18th!

Email countymanager@arlingtonva.us  and oppose the relocation of the Bikeshare station.  Here's a sample email to customize as you see fit:

Mr. Schwartz,

I am writing today to oppose the unilateral decision to relocate the Penrose Square Bikeshare station.  The new location is too far from the primary destinations on the Pike, and on a cross street which does not cross the Pike, limiting its usefulness largely to those who live North of the Pike.

Trying to solve illegal and unsafe driver behavior on the backs of Bikeshare users who are choosing to use a method of transportation that is an objective positive for our community is reprehensible and a terrible precedent.

Reversing the decision to put the bikeshare station at Penrose Square, a decision reached through a broad community conversation that included an online survey form, with little if any public process is not how we are supposed to solve problems in Arlington and moving the bikeshare station multiple times unnecessarily is a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Please halt this misguided plan and let's talk about this problem as a community.
