Making South Glebe / West Glebe Work for You
Level of Effort: 10 minutes, at home in your PJs
Deadline: Tue 10/18 11:59pm

Arlington County is looking to improve safety and access at the South Glebe / West Glebe intersection (adjacent to the current bridge closure & reconstruction).  First step: get info on YOUR experience at the intersection. Does it feel safe crossing the street now?  How do you expect your usage of the area will change when the new bridge opens (with far better sidewalks & low-stress bike infrastructure)?

The most critical thing is that you share YOUR experience, but here are some of our thoughts:

  • The existing crosswalk feels unsafe, especially because of having to cross the service road (whose stop sign drivers treat as a yield sign at best) as the drivers are looking over their shoulder for a break in traffic, not in front of their vehicle for pedestrians.
  • We need a crosswalk on the west side of the intersection.  People try to cross their now, but can't do so safely.  There is a natural desire to use the west side as it is the most direct route from the neighborhood to the Exxon's convenience store.
  • The improved facilities for walking & biking on the new bridge will create new bike/ped traffic coming off of the Four Mile Run Trail to access the bridge.  The existing connections for this are too narrow & there is insufficient space for bikes & peds to queue at the corners while waiting for the light to change.
  • Much of the car traffic here has just left I-395.  The design of this area needs to signal to drivers that they are now in a residential area with people walking & biking.  Signage must be human-scale, not massive overhead exit signs.

First take the survey & make it clear this is not currently a space that feels safe for those on foot or on bikes.  Second, go to the map & either add your own markers or add supportive comments or upvotes on ours!
