Tactical Bus Stops: A Great Tool for the Multimodal Toolbox
Level of Effort: 5 minutes, at home, in your PJs
Deadline: Sat 2/8 11:59pm

Last year, Arlington installed improvements to the intersection of Glebe Road and Old Glebe Road as a result of the Glebe Road High-Injury Network Safety Audit.  Flex-posts and a tactical bus stop island were used to prevent high-risk left turns, shorten pedestrian crossing distances, and improve sight lines.  The tactical bus island is a new treatment for Arlington, so they are collecting feedback on its use as well as the rest of the tactical intervention.  We think it's made a big improvement in shortening crossing distances and improving sight lines while maintaining & even improving bus operations and the county should consider using them in the future to solve similar or other problems.

Questions 3 & 4: How did you feel using the corridor before and after the treatment

We think using the corridor as a pedestrian and a transit user feels safer

5. Describe your reasons for your answers to questions 3 + 4 above:

The improvements have made it feel much safer to cross Old Glebe as cars can no longer make the right turn from Glebe to Old Glebe at a high rate of speed. Using the bus at the tactical stop works well and the bus seems safer now that it doesn't have to safely negotiate pulling back into speedy Glebe Road traffic.

6. Is there anything else you’d like to add about this project for staff to know?

The tactical bus platform works well and should be considered as a solution for other issues on our streets, both safety problems and operational problems.
