300+ new Transit-Oriented Homes and a Potential Protected Bike Lane in the heart of Clarendon
Level of Effort: 10 minutes, at home, in your PJs
Deadline: Thu 12/19 11:59pm

An aging Clarendon office building from the 80s has been submitted for potential redevelopment. With its prime location directly across from the Clarendon Metro, this building could provide transit accessible homes for many Arlington neighbors while upgrading the public realm to the benefit of all Arlingtonians.

Give your feedback on Clarendon Square - support height and density near Metro, and suggest commonsense public realm improvements like a protected bike lane on Wilson Boulevard.

Land Use and Density
Residential is appropriate.  Retail amount is reasonable.  Proposed density seems low for a site directly across the street from MetroRail and walking distance to nearly everything someone needs.

Building Height Form and Architecture
The height seems low for a building directly across the street from MetroRail.
The building massing is appropriate.

Parking and Loading
The site's existing garage has more parking than necessary for residential that is so close to MetroRail.  Suggest that some parking be reserved for use as a shared garage with hourly rates to support neighborhood retail.
Are the garage bike rooms intended to be accessed via elevator or by riding down the garage ramp with cars?  If the ramp, please ensure that bikes have a away to bypass any controlled access equipment like arms / gates / doors that control car access to the garage.

Transportation
Please provide a high-quality protected bike lane on Wilson Blvd across the project frontage and ensure sufficient space exists in the Highland Street right-of-way for a future protected facility there.  Given the constrains of the existing parking garage columns, consider approaches on Wilson like "outboard" cafe areas between street trees or placing street trees inline with the street parking as was done on the 2800 block of Wilson Blvd. A cafe area may not be needed along Wilson Blvd at all given the location of the proposed retail & plaza.
